The Roswell Downtown Development Authority has now opened the field for builders to apply to redevelop the former Southern Skillet site.

Sealed statements from developers must be submitted by Dec. 16.

The DDA is seeking a highly experienced developer or development team to acquire the site to create an iconic mixed use development which will anchor the redevelopment of Roswell's downtown area, provide a pedestrian oriented mix of land uses which will be compatible with the unique, historic character of downtown Roswell while appealing to the growing demographic of millennials and empty-nesters who value proximity to our downtown businesses and cultural attractions.

Once potential development teams are selected, candidates will receive a request for proposals.

Southern Skillet closed in early 2011, adding to the decline of the 4.3-acre Roswell Plaza Shopping Center on Alpharetta Street.

Roswell's Downtown Development Authority purchased the property in January for $4.8 million by way of a $5 million loan from the city.

The shopping center sits along Norcross Street and Ga. 9 in a prime location near downtown.
