A major DeKalb County thoroughfare was shut down during Thursday’s morning rush hour after a car crashed into a fire hydrant, causing a geyser of water to spew high into the air.

The crash happened before 6:30 a.m. on Buford Highway near Chamblee Tucker Road.

DeKalb police Lt. Consuela Howard told the AJC that officers arrived within minutes of the crash, but were “unable to locate anybody in the vehicle.”

Buford Highway was closed in both directions south of Chamblee Tucker for about two hours. The flow of water was stopped and the road was reopened just before 8:30 a.m.
