Brookhaven has wrapped up its road repaving for the year, finishing work on 20 streets.

The city of 54,000 plans to pave more than 100 streets over five years, from 2017 to 2021. This year, crews repaved 20 different street totaling 6.85 miles of lanes, starting with Tugaloo Drive in March and ending with Winchester Trail.

Over the past three years, Brookhaven paved more than 46 lane-miles on 127 streets, the city said in a statement. Crews paved the roads based on their conditions, starting with the worst streets. Brookhaven is one year ahead of schedule on its five-year plan, according to the city.

“Brookhaven is well on its way to having the best roads in the entire state of Georgia,” Mayor John Ernst said in a statement. “Since we are so far ahead of schedule, we will bring in the laser trucks to scientifically evaluate the present condition of all our roads, to provide the basis for a new five-year plan.”

The work is funded by voter-approved SPLOST proceeds.

Several other DeKalb County communities that became cities in the past decade have made repaving streets and filling potholes a priority.
