Georgia DOT will begin to set the pre-stressed concrete bridge beams for the new State Route 20 bridge over the Chattahoochee River this week.

Each bridge beam is custom made like a puzzle piece that only fits in one place. The beams will be driven up Interstate 985 then across State Route 20 to the work zone. Each beam is 140 feet long and six feet tall. The work will close one lane of State Route 20 overnight from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday,” said Harold Mull, Georgia DOT District Construction Engineer.

The 1.07 mile long project widens State Route 20 from James Burgess Road in Forsyth to Burnett Trail in Gwinnett to a four-lane, divided highway with sidewalks and includes new bridges over the Chattahoochee River at a cost of $10.2 million.
