The Fayette County High School Army JROTC earned two state championships at the Georgia State Army JROTC Drill Meet held in Griffin. Fayette County High's Army JROTC program is under the direction of First Sergeant Anthony Bell. He was extremely proud of his cadets for their spirit and strength demonstrated at the competition.
Newnan-Coweta Habitat for Humanity recognized 10 individuals and one group who have attained the highest award for volunteerism: The President's Volunteer Service Award. Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to married Newnan residents, Larry and Rita Wilson, who have volunteered 5,995 and 4,811 hours respectively. Silver award winners include a men's group from the Rutledge Center who have volunteered over 500 hours and Mary Van Geuder, a Newnan resident who has volunteered over 300 hours. Bronze awards were be presented to Newnan residents: Patti Grant (148 hours), Butch Jones (117 hours), David Mitchell (155 hours), Leon Roberts (190 hours), Dennis Yokers (170 hours) and Senoia residents John Anderson (176 hours) and Kirby Belwood (123 hours). Award recipients volunteer their time in Newnan-Coweta Habitat's ReStore which sells gently used and donated goods to the public to support the organization's mission of providing decent and affordable housing to individuals and families in need.
Keep Forsyth County Beautiful was recognized for recent accolades and awards. On March 24, KFCB received the 2017 Watershed Award from the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. KFCB volunteers Ralph Cromer and Andres Torres received the Georgia DNR 2017 Innovation in Adopt-A-Stream Award for a remote watering station they built. KFCB Community Outreach Specialist Kevin Smith was awarded the Georgia DNR 2017 Rivers Alive Organizer of the Year award for his efforts in organizing and conducting waterway cleanups in Forsyth County.
Atlanta Technical College hosted the annual SkillsUSA Georgia Postsecondary State Conference in February where four ATC students were recognized in their respective competitions, including two who took first place. Kristie Bolemen and Chauncy Walker will both go on to represent ATC at the national conference in Louisville, KY this summer.
Coming off of a win at the Regional contest, three students from Riverwood International Charter School's Culinary Arts program competed recently in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America State Hot Food Culinary Competition. Senior Julia Dias and sophomores Silvia Diaz and Christel Wallace took home silver medals for their outstanding menu and culinary creations.
