Bicyclist, 19, killed in Athens

A 19-year-old man riding a bicycle died after being hit by a vehicle in Athens on Saturday night.

Tobias Antwon Smith was going west on Winterville Road near Hancock Road around 7:20 p.m. when his bike was struck in the back by a 2006 Mazda 3, Athens-Clarke County police said.

The Mazda driver swerved to try to avoid the collision after spotting Smith, whose bike did not have lights or reflectors, authorities said.

Smith was transported to Athens Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

No charges have been filed and the investigation is continuing.
