Stockbridge teacher Heather MacKenzie traveled to Mount Vernon, Va. for the week-long George Washington Teacher Institute, where she and other teachers learned about Washington's life and accomplishments through discussions and workshops. Participants met with Washington scholars and worked in the Fred W. Smith National Library for the Study of George Washington.

North Springs High School teacher Karen Allsteadt participated in the Siemens Teachers as Researchers fellowship program in June at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Allsteadt, along with other teachers, learned about innovative ways to teach Science, Technology, Engineering and Math concepts to students.

Two students and teachers met Katy Perry at her concert in Atlanta June 28. Students Tiara Brooks and Jaylin Barber and teachers Pauline Weisz and Matthew Hall met Perry through the Make Roar Happen campaign, a partnership between Perry, Staples and DonorsChoose.org that supports teachers during the back-to-school season.

Jeremiah Bradberry, transportation fleet technician for the Cobb County School District, won the ninth annual statewide competition for school bus technicians. To win, Bradberry took a written exam and completed several diagnostic challenges. Georgia Association for Pupil Transportation conducts the contest. In November, Bradberry will compete in the national competition in Kansas City, Mo.

Children and adults alike are invited to compete in Eye Level’s 22nd annual Global Writing Competition July 1-Aug. 31. Budding children’s book authors can submit illustrations and narratives July 1-Aug. 31 for a chance to have their work published and featured in an Eye Level calendar. Brexton Pham will represent Georgia at the 2014 National Youth Science Camp June 27-July 20 in West Virginia. Pham is a recent graduate of Kennesaw Mountain High School, and will study computer science and economics at Stanford University in the fall. National Youth Science Camp is a leadership program that gives students the opportunity to listen to lectures and participate in hands-on science activities.

Recent Marietta High School graduate Jeneshia Washington-Hughes received a presidential scholarship for outstanding achievement from Davidson College, where she will enroll in the fall.
