Two metro Atlanta students won their regional business plan competition this year and will compete for $25,000 in funding and business services at the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship Challenge in Silicon Valley. Tucker High School student Donte' Watkins will pitch his tutorial service business, Second Chance Tutors. Nicholas Middlebrooks, a Georgia Tech student, will pitch his business TooLive, location-based software/application that optimizes nightlife experiences. The national competition takes place in October.

Brett Heimlich, a student in the University System of Georgia's MD/PhD Program based at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Regents University, has received a Fulbright-Fogarty Award and will spend the next year in Malawi studying Sickle Cell Disease.
While in Africa, Heimlich will be based with the University of North Carolina Project-Malawi, with a mission of identifying innovative, culturally acceptable, and affordable methods to improve the health of the people there, through research, health systems strengthening, prevention, training, and care.

Sixty-one Atlanta public school students have been selected as Posse Scholars and are beginning college this fall on full-tuition scholarships. The Posse Foundation identifies, recruits and trains students with high academic and leadership skills for an intensive and ongoing leadership development program..
While in college, the Posse Scholars will meet consistently with a designated mentor for the first two years of school. Posse Scholars and alumni also receive career support through the foundation, which includes internships at national and international companies and organizations.

North Gwinnett High School student Francis Littig recently completed work on a running trail at North Gwinnett Middle for his Eagle Scouting project. The trail will facilitate a partnership between the middle school running club and North Gwinnett High's Track and Field Program.
The trail runs through a mature hardwood forest, around a springhead, and over a creek. The trail is a little less than half a mile long and joins with the existing running pattern used by the middle school running club. It will also serve as an outdoor classroom for use by all students.

Elementary students at six Fayette County schools raised more than $7,500 for heart health over the last school year by participating in the American Heart Association’s Jump Rope for Heart fundraiser.
Cleveland Elementary, Crabapple Lane Elementary, Inman Elementary, Sara Harp Minter Elementary, and Spring Hill Elementary participated in the event and this year's goal is 100 percent participation.

Trevor A. Turner, an associate professor in Clark Atlanta University's Educational Leadership department, was named CAU's Vulcan teacher of the year by Vulcan Materials Company.
Turner has spent almost 30 years at CAU as an administrator and professor.
