Visitors to the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center in Lawrenceville can now see a piece of the Berlin Wall that is on display outside the Lawrenceville building.
The 12-foot-high, four-ton piece of wall is on loan from Suwanee Grill owners Ray Stanjevich and Suzanne Cartwright. It was previously displayed in front of Suwanee city hall. One side — which previously faced West Berlin — was painted with graffiti of an American flag, buildings and people.
The wall once isolated West Berlin from East Germany during the Cold War. It was torn down by protesters in 1989 and Germany was reunified the next year.
Stanjevich and Cartwright bought the piece of wall at auction for $23,500.
“Suzanne and I purchased the wall as a way to keep it in the community where we live and work,” Stanjevich said in a statement. “We believe it is important for kids to learn history because we too easily forget the bad things that have happened in the past.”
