After a seven-months renovation, and nearly five years planning process, Avondale Estates’ Willis Park reopened this week, with caveats. While the new playground equipment, pathways and pavilion are fully accessible, the playing fields remain off limits for another two-to four weeks so the sod can take hold.

This is likely the first major overhaul ever for the 3-acre, 92-year old park named for city founder George Willis. Renovation costs are roughly $650,000. A grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration are scheduled for 11 a.m.-1 p.m., May 14 at the park, 51 Dartmouth Avenue.
