Avondale Estates announced Monday that its infamous “Erector Set,” located on the city’s east side at East College Avenue and Maple Street, is finally biting the dust.

At the request last month of city commissioners, property owners Euramex Management recently filed a demolition permit and will tear the structure down “in the near future.”

“We really appreciate them doing this,” Mayor Jonathan Elmore said. “It’s a definite sign of progress.”

Construction of the two-story steel structure began in early 2008 and was intended for Bonnie and Parke Kallenberg who own Finders Keepers Consignment. The business was to occupy the lower level while the Kallenbergs would live in an upper-level condo.

When the economy tanked construction ceased for good around September 2008, and two years later Century Retail, which owned the property, filed for bankruptcy. Euramex bought the two-acre lot in August 2014, and several months later also purchased the 13-acre Fenner-Dunlop property nearby.
