If the proposed cities of Tucker and LaVista Hills pass Tuesday, Avondale Estates will likely approve a new annexation map, scaled down significantly from the version that died in last year’s legislature.

It will not include the DeKalb Farmers Market property or the residential neighborhoods of Katie Kerr and Forrest Hills. But the city still wants the Rio Circle commercial district, seen as a northern gateway between the city and Ponce de Leon Avenue.

“We don’t need any more residential property,” Mayor Jonathan Elmore said, “but we do need commercial property to make our city more viable. We are going to start visiting and talking with those [Rio Circle] businesses. We would like for them to want to come in — the threat of annexation is not a good motivating factor.”

Elmore added that commissioners plan discussing contracting an annexation feasibility study next week during a special work session. He said he wasn’t sure if Avondale Estates would present a new map if the LaVista Hills/Tucker movements fail.
