Avondale Estates Commissioner Randy Beebe presented a $750 check this week to Dontae Andrews, principal of Avondale Elementary, the only school inside city limits.

Last month resident Paul Brown proposed the city authorize a $5,000 donation to the school, which commissioners were divided on, and several veteran citizens vocally opposed during a work session.

But Beebe, who said in September he was against spending taxpayer money on the school, wound up raising the $750 through t-shirt sales during the city’s AutumFest earlier this month.

Andrews, in his second year as principal, said the money would go to the PTA, to help improve the school’s appearance and also help fund the student awards program.

“My goal,” Andrews said, “is to make Avondale Elementary a community school again, to get families in Avondale to trust the school, to work with the school, to partner with us and eventually bring their kids to our school.”
