Candidates interested in running for Austell mayor or three City Council posts may qualify for the Nov. 5 general election in mid-August.
Hours will be 8:30 a.m. to noon and 1-4:30 p.m. Aug. 19, 20 and 21 in the Conference Room, Austell Threadmill Complex, 5000 Austell-Powder Springs Road, Suite 107, Austell.
The qualifying fee for mayor is $1,080 and for each of the three council members is $432 and must be payable by cash, check or money order to the City of Austell.
Due to ongoing health issues, Austell’s longtime mayor Joe Jerkins has decided to retire after 30 consecutive years of service.
Serving in his place since last August has been mayor pro tem, now mayor, Ollie Clemons who was chosen as mayor pro tem by Jerkins.
Other posts to be elected will be at-large Post 2 Council member, Ward 2 Council member and Ward 4 Council member.
Now those posts are held by at-large Post 2 Council Member Valerie Anderson - the new mayor pro tem, Ward 2 Council Member Scott S. Thomas and Ward 4 Council Member Sandra Leverette.
Only city residents, who are registered to vote with the State of Georgia at sos.ga.gov/elections, are eligible to vote in city elections.
