The Atlanta City Council on Monday will consider a resolution saying the Central Library building should be preserved, not demolished – whether or not the Atlanta-Fulton Public Library System continues to use it.

The library at 1 Margaret Mitchell Square “should be reprogrammed and renovated,” says the resolution, to be transmitted to the library board and the Fulton Board of Commissioners. If the Central Library moves to another location, the resolution continues, its building “should be preserved, reimagined and redeveloped.”

The resolution was sponsored by Council Member Kwanza Hall and passed Tuesday by the Council’s Community Development & Human Resources Committee.

The library, opened in 1980, was the last work by noted architect Marcel Breuer and is considered a strong example of the Bauhaus movement. Library officials have estimated it could cost $85 million to renovate the building versus $40 million to build a new branch.
