A winter storm watch is in effect for metro Atlanta until Friday morning.

As rain continued to linger in the area, the watch, set to expire at 10 a.m. Friday, was issued for metro counties including Cherokee, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton and Gwinnett.

Channel 2 Action News meteorologist David Chandley said there is a 100 percent chance of rain Thursday with highs in the low 50s. A wintry mix could move in late Thursday afternoon into the evening, he said. The chance for snow is greater in the Georgia mountains.

The Georgia Department of Transportation alerted drivers to be aware of road conditions.

“We are continuously monitoring current weather conditions and forecasts as snow flurries and high winds are predicted for North Georgia,” GDOT Commissioner Keith Golden said in a news release. “Weather forecasts indicate snow, black ice, fallen trees and damaged traffic signals are possible from Thursday evening through Friday morning.”

Forecasters said the potential for black ice will exist as far south as a Columbus-to-Greensboro line.

High temperatures will stay in the low to mid-50s through Sunday, with lows in the mid to upper 30s, Chandley said. Friday’s overnight low is expected to drop to 30.

Sunny skies are forecast for Friday through Sunday, putting a stop to all the rain.

The flood watch for much of north Georgia, including parts of metro Atlanta, was extended through Thursday evening as rainfall totals continued to climb.

The flood watch is in effect generally from I-20 northward, where forecasters are predicting that an additional 2 to 2.5 inches of rain could fall through Thursday.

Flood warnings were in effect early Wednesday for several counties in the northwest corner of the state, where as much as 4 to 6 inches of rain had pushed creeks to flood stage.
