Westminster Schools in Atlanta has won an award from The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, the organization that hosts the Emmy Awards.
WCAT — the student-run webTV station — was presented the 2017 National Student Production Award Tuesday.
Bennett Porson, William Turton and the WCAT staff won in the Sports–Live Event category for their coverage of the varsity football team's second-round state playoff game against Savannah High School in November 2016, the independent Christian school announced.
Porson is now pursuing a journalism degree at the University of Georgia. Turton, WCAT’s technical director, said it’s a great honor for the crew “to achieve this level of success and recognition.”
WCAT has won eight regional awards from the Southeast Chapter of NATAS since 2014, but this marks the first time WCAT won at the national level.
The award recognizes the hard work of students who execute “broadcasts with six cameras, three on-air announcers, a pre-game show, replay, custom scoreboard, graphics, and more,” said Daniel Searl, WCAT’s faculty advisor.
Industry professionals and university professors judged the entries and selected the national winners.
Westminster is located at 1424 West Paces Ferry Road NW.
