APD fired James Ball after shooting the Gwinnett man during an altercation. A Channel 2 Action News investigation found other examples of Atlanta recruits who were fired because of alleged crimes or ethical violations.

All told, 17 percent of the 362 recruits on APD's payroll during 2016 and 2017 were dismissed or resigned because of problems during their training period.

“While our background screening process is thorough, it is impossible to predict the poor choices some individuals will make once they are hired,” APD said in a statement to Channel 2.
