The city of Atlanta is moving to spend up to $7.65 million total on month-to-month extensions of an airport security contract after a failed request for proposals earlier this year.
HSS Inc., a Denver, Colo.-based provider of airport security services, has worked at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport under its present contract since Feb. 22, 2011, according to the agenda of the City Council Finance Committee. HSS offers “gate guard” security — screening employees and vendors, inspecting the airport perimeter and providing other services.
In October, with the fifth year of the HSS contract in its final months, the city sought proposals for a new contract. Delays forced the city to extend HSS’ contract for 90 days from Feb. 22. In April, it was decided “that a cancellation and re-advertisement of the solicitation for Airport Security Services is in the best interest of the city,” according a staff memo.
A new request for proposals is in the works, but the process will not be completed before the May 22 end of HSS’ 90-day contract extension. The Council will now consider paying HSS $2.37 million for its services from Feb. 22 through June 30, and up to $5.28 million total for the July 1-Nov. 23 period, unless the contract is terminated earlier.
