With the debut of its new bicycle-sharing program anticipated this year, the city of Atlanta is gearing up to hire a bike safety coordinator to educate the public about safe riding practices.
The Department of Planning and Community Development intends to apply for a $90,852 grant from the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety to fund the coordinator’s salary and the costs of equipment and services.
The new hire would be tasked with launching a marketing campaign and working with Atlanta police on enforcing safe-riding laws. The job would be a one-year contract position starting this autumn.
The safety officer’s job is keyed to the city’s bike rental program, which was supposed to start last year but was delayed. A pilot program is now expected to start this summer with about 100 bikes offered by the vendor CycleHop. It eventually may have at least 500 bicycles available at 50 short-term rental stations.
