In response to a pressing safety issue impacting 200,000 vehicles in the Atlanta area, Mayor Keisha Bottoms has declared May as Airbag Recall Repair Month, according to a press release.

More than 500,000 vehicles in Georgia have unrepaired, recalled airbags. When exposed over time to heat and humidity, these recalled airbags can transform from life-saving devices to life-threatening ones – in a crash, they could rupture and cause injury or death.

To help keep drivers safe heading into the summer heat and to echo the Mayor’s proclamation, the National Safety Council and local Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram Truck dealers have launched Airbag Recall Repair Month campaign in May. This statewide campaign aims to convince Georgia drivers to make safety a priority by taking immediate action to prevent serious injury and death in the Peach State.

This safety recall impacts 15% of all passenger vehicles statewide. It’s critical that every Atlanta area driver check their vehicle as we head into the summer heat – when airbag repairs are especially urgent.

Drivers can get their airbags repaired for free in three easy steps:

  • Locate your vehicle's 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • Enter your VIN into CheckToProtect.org.
  • Schedule a free repair appointment at your local dealership.

Airbag Recall Repair Month is a joint effort of the National Safety Council and Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram as part of the Check To Protect program. Today, program partners include vehicle safety advocates as well as Toyota, Nissan, and Volvo.
