Democrat disqualified from running for Senate seat

A man trying to unseat Sen. Vincent Fort in Atlanta in the Democratic primary next month was disqualified from the election Wednesday.

Jeff Sadiq, also known as Jaffar Sadiq, could not prove that he had lived for more than a year at the address he claimed as his home, according to an investigation by the office of the Secretary of State. Secretary of State Brian Kemp disqualified him Wednesday.

Sadiq, who claimed to live on Atlantic Drive in Atlanta, had to be a legal resident there for a year prior to the Nov. 8 general election in order to qualify for office.

Sadiq’s sister-in-law said she had been renting the property to him since 2012, but there was no lease or rental agreement. At least one neighbor said she had never met him.

Because there is not enough time to reprint ballots, a prominent notice will be posted at polling places telling voters Sadiq has been disqualified. No votes cast for him will be counted.

No Republicans are running for the seat, and Fort is the only other Democrat to have qualified.
