One person was in custody and two others were being sought Tuesday after Atlanta police chased a group of armed robbery suspects into south DeKalb County.

Police at one point were investigating a possible link between the robbery and a dead body discovered near the end of the chase on River Road, but later determined there was no connection, authorities said.

The robbery happened just after 12:30 a.m. in the parking lot of a Kroger in the 1200 block of Moreland Avenue, according to Atlanta police dispatchers.

The victim gave police a description of the suspects’ vehicle, and when officers spotted and tried to stop the Lexus, the suspects bailed out of the car along south DeKalb’s River Road and fled on foot, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“One of the subjects turned around and pointed a weapon at the officer,” Atlanta police Capt. Todd Coyt told Channel 2.

“The officer fired some shots and no one was hit,” Coyt said.

Several hours after the chase, a motorist driving along River Road discovered a man’s body lying in the roadway.

Despite initial speculation that the body and the robbery were connected, DeKalb County police spokeswoman Mekka Parish said investigators determined that the body and robbery were unrelated.
