Atlanta Annexation could hurt Avondale

Avondale Estates officials have sent an email to residents outlining the effect of a proposed Atlanta annexation on the city. A group of parents and residents are calling for a referendum on annexing their neighborhoods near Emory University into Atlanta, with boundaries including Briar Vista Elementary School, Fernbank Elementary and Druid Hills High.

If successful, the email says, the city would lose Druid Hills High School; students could lose the opportunity to take advanced studies classes at the Fernbank Science Center; possibility of a loss in property value; taxpayer investment in a new Fernbank Elementary School and improvements to Druid Hills High and other facilities could be lost without compensation.
