A City Council committee has endorsed accepting a $295,148 grant for the Atlanta Workforce Development Agency to provide re-employment and job training services to dislocated workers.

The Community Development & Human Resources Committee approved an ordinance authorizing the mayor’s office to accept the funds from the Workforce Division, Georgia Department of Economic Development.

A dislocated worker is defined as an individual laid off or terminated and eligible for unemployment benefits; a person jobless due to a business closure or downsizing; a self-employed person now unemployed due to general economic conditions or natural disaster; or a homemaker dependent on someone else’s income that has now stopped.

Also, a spouse of an active-duty Armed Forces member who lost his or her job as a result of relocating due to a change of duty station.

In related action, the committee approved a resolution authorizing a one-year renewal of a program with MARTA to buy single, weekly and 30-day round trip Breeze Cards to help Workforce Development clients get to and from work by public transportation. Up to $100,000 in pass purchases are authorized.

Both measures go to the full Council on Sept. 6.
