Saying abandoned docks are showing up all around Lake Lanier, management of the lake is calling on the public to report derelicts and suspicious activity.

"Dock abandonment is dangerous and a burden to all taxpayers," the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said in a public service announcement. "The corps is asking you to help stop this unacceptable activity."

Suspicious activity, the corps said, “can include a dock being pushed across the lake; private docks appearing on the shore of a public recreation area; and launching a dock into the water from a boat ramp.”

To report abandoned docks and suspicious activity, contact the Lake Lanier Project Office at 770-945-9531 or lakelaniershoreline@usace.army.mil

Abandoned docks are a public hazard, with potentially loose boards, jagged metal and exposed nails and screws, the corps said. Besides being unsightly, they harm the environment as materials break down, and they are costly to taxpayers to remove and clean up afterwards. Information: https://bit.ly/2q0bev3
