The Atlanta Regional Commission recently announced the awarding of funding and technical assistance for public art to four metro-area communities including Decatur. The city will receive a $15,000 grant for a mural on the MARTA overpass at West Trinity and Atlanta Avenue near the Gateway Manor apartments currently being re-developed.

The mural will cover both sides of the overpass and its support beams. Built in the late 1970s, the overpass spans a district that for much of the 20th century was a thriving African American business/residential district, with former Mayor Elizabeth Wilson once describing the Atlanta Avenue of that period as “the Auburn Avenue of Decatur.”

There is still no timeframe for naming the artist and when the overpass gets painted. Other communities receiving funding include Hapeville, downtown Woodstock and the King Memorial MARTA station.
