Q: This COVID-19 and shelter at home have me wanting to run as I used to when I was younger. I’ve seen virtual runs, but am curious about the “Kettle Krush 5K” Race in Place. Can you tell me about it?

A: The "Kettle Krush 5K" is the Salvation Army Women's Auxiliary event held annually for the past five years. This year will be different and is called Race in Place. The premise is not running but to include anyone who wishes to participate while we are all hunkered down. The event will be May 16.

This year COVID-19 halted a lot of things for many but the SAWA did not want to cancel or reschedule their 5K when life returned to “normal.”

“Because the Salvation Army really needs financial support now to help with initiatives now in metro Atlanta, we decided to try this different event format,” said Cindy Theiler, Salvation Army Women’s auxiliary president and co-race chair.

Anyone can participate because there is no running or walking.

To participate, go to itsyourrace.com and sign up under Kettle Krush 5K - Race in Place. The entry fee is $30 if received by Wednesday (11:59 p.m.) and $35 from Thursday-May 13, which is the deadline.

“Random drawings for awards will be selected from those who are participating in the event,” said Theiler. “Some of the big prizes are tickets to the Georgia Aquarium, Big Peach gift certificates and lots of goodies from the Home Depot.”

Because teams can be very powerful and supportive, the SAWA is encouraging team participation.

“We have several goals, but the number one goal of this event is to enhance the awareness for the Salvation Army,” she said.

"Opening for the event will be the commanders of the Salvation Army here in metro Atlanta. They will speak about the mission programs and assistance, particularly related to their COVID-19 initiatives, then followed by the awards and prize drawings" said the co-chair," Theiler said.

The women’s auxiliary is wanting to see how creative others are “racing in place” before the broadcast and are asking for posts of photos or videos on their Facebook page.

“Use #KettleKrushRaceinPlace by 5/14 when posting,” stated Theiler.

Event: May 16 from 9-10 a.m. Go to https://www.facebook.com//KKAtlanta5K
