The Alpharetta City Council has approved spending $244,780 to create a space in City Hall dedicated to the community’s history.

Malone Design/Fabrication of Decatur will build out the Alpharetta & Old Milton County Museum following plans that were presented to the Council in August. Under its contract with the city, it will create shop drawings and graphic production files; fabricate exhibits and scenic elements; produce graphics and media; install the exhibit, and provide the city with a close-out package.

A walk-through of the completed exhibit is to take place in February. The museum will occupy an L-shaped space on the first floor of City Hall.

Malone had been working under a $53,500 design contract awarded by the Council in August 2015. It met with representatives of the city, members of the Alpharetta Historical Society and others. The city also has been gathering residents’ keepsakes to put on display.

A timeline along the walls will depict Alpharetta history, from the departure of the Cherokees and the city’s founding in 1858 to the present. There will be interactive elements, wall graphics and a variety of artifacts, from a spinning wheel and butter churn to a moonshine still and barber chair.
