The Alpharetta City Council has approved a plan to improve pedestrian safety downtown by removing six street parking spaces and installing additional signage.
The council also approved a proposed concept plan for a new mid-block crosswalk on Milton Avenue at Teasley Street next to the parking deck.
The actions result from an AECOM pedestrian safety study and staff review of its “more readily implemented recommendations,” according to a staff report to the council.
To be removed are two parking spaces on Milton at Teasley, where the new crosswalk would go; and one parking space apiece on the west side of Canton Street at Church Street, the east side of Canton south of Old Canton Street, in the southeast quadrant of Ga. 9 and Academy Street/Milton Avenue, and in the northeast quadrant of Roswell and Old Roswell streets.
Staff also recommended additional signage at the Old Roswell crosswalk, and “Leading Pedestrian Intervals” at traffic lights, giving pedestrians a head start on crossing a street before motorists turning left get a green.
