Part of the Big Creek Greenway trail in Alpharetta will be closed for emergency repairs for one week this month, city officials announced.

The greenway between Old Milton Parkway and Preston Ridge Road (the YMCA) will be closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily from Monday, Oct. 8 through Friday, Oct. 12. No weekend work is planned, and the trail will be open at 5 p.m. each day as that day’s work is completed, officials said.

The Alpharetta City Council in August approved spending up to $100,000 to close a sinkhole and eroded area about 50 feet long and 3 to 4 feet deep. The city’s engineering consultant, Pond & Co., believes elevated creek water levels and flow likely caused erosion, while a large, decomposing tree trunk next to the trail could have contributed to the sinkhole.

Pond’s recommendations included removing the stump and other debris, filling the empty space, constructing a gabion wall with backfill to help stabilize the slope, and adding surge stone and/or rip rap to the creek bank.
