The Alpharetta City Council lowered the speed limits on several streets and added a number of new streets covered by its speed zone ordinance as it updated the law for the first time in more than five years.

The ordinance, according to a staff report to the council, “was last amended November 2012. Additional streets and changes to roadway limits since the last amendment require that changes be made to address speed complaints to ensure safety.”

For Ga. 9 from 50 feet north of Marietta Street to 160 feet north of Academy Street, the speed limit was dropped to 30 from 35 mph; Canton Street from Milton Avenue to 50 feet north of Church Street, to 25 from 30 mph; Haynes Bridge Road from Academy to Ga. 120, to 25 from 35 mph; and Roswell Street from Ga. 9 to Milton, to 25 from 35 mph.

The council also approved a list of streets where speed detection devices can be used. The Georgia Department of Transportation has approved the list, staff said.
