The Alpharetta City Council has approved a contract with RedSpeed Georgia to install, maintain and operate school zone speed detection cameras.

“The Department of Public Safety receives complaints on a daily basis regarding speeding in school zones,” according to a staff report to the council. “Providing enforcement capabilities at each of the nine schools in the city is extremely manpower and resource intensive.”

Recent state legislation allows the use of photo/video enforcement in school zones, a matter of “technology vs. manpower … to increase student safety, change driver behavior and reduce complaints,” staff said.

After receiving authorization from police, RedSpeed would send a notice of violation; collect payment by mail or through its online violation viewing and payment portal; and deposit the payment into the city’s bank account after applying a service fee of 33 percent (35 percent with optional license plate reader service), according to the vendor’s proposal to the city.
