The openings of numerous campgrounds and day use areas at Allatoona Lake in Cherokee and Bartow counties will be delayed until March 29 due to flooding and the possibility of more rain, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced.

“The safety of visitors to Allatoona Lake is our priority,” said Chief Ranger Rusty Simmons. “When the water recedes, these areas will need to be cleaned, debris removed, and electrical systems evaluated.”

The affected campgrounds are Sweetwater, Victoria, McKaskey and Payne. McKinney Campground is open, but 76 of 150 sites have been affected by high water, the Army Corps said.

As of midweek, all corps-managed day use areas were closed except for Riverside, Cooper Furnace, Stamp Boat Ramp, Blockhouse Ramp and Galts Ferry Day Boat Ramp.

Reservations at the affected campgrounds or campsites will be canceled, and customers will be refunded their money, the Army Corps said. For information about notifications and refunds: www.recreation.gov or 877-444-6777.
