AJC reporter wins regional television award

Channel 2 Action News won a Southeastern Emmy award Saturday for stories that helped Georgia revenue officials recoup up to $6.4 million. AJC reporter Brad Schrade collaborated on the story.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution investigative reporter Brad Schrade won a regional Emmy award Saturday.

The award for “outstanding investigative report,” given by the Southeast chapter of The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, was based on reporting Schrade and former Channel 2 Action News reporter Jodie Fleischer did last year on Hapeville City Councilwoman Ruth Barr.

Schrade and Fleischer reported that dozens of Barr’s clients in her tax preparer business said they had been ripped off, or marked down for deductions to which they were not entitled.

The Georgia Department of Revenue opened an investigation into Barr as a result of the AJC/Channel 2 reporting and found suspect returns prepared by Barr that could lead to the recovery of $6.4 million.

Barr was recently convicted of theft in a separate case in Gwinnett County.
