Decatur has hired Michelle Hirose as senior engineer after the job had been vacant 11 months. She replaces John Madajewski who worked 13 years for the city before retiring Aug. 28.

During the interim Decatur hired a temporary consultant to help fill the void.

Hirose has spent the previous 16 months as Roswell’s senior transportation engineer. Before that she worked nine years as a highway design manager and five years as a roadway manager. Already a Decatur resident, Hirose earned a B.S. in civil engineering from Georgia Tech in 1999.

While acknowledging the lengthy vacancy John Maximuk, director of Decatur’s Design, Environment and Construction Division, indicated Hirose’s versatility was worth the wait.

“She has traditional car-transportation and road-building experience,” he said. “But she also has a deep knowledge of bicycle/pedestrian lanes, and should be an invaluable addition to our ‘complete streets group’ that meets monthly.”
