You can take home a new furry friend from the Gwinnett County Animal Shelter free of charge every Friday in March.

The shelter currently has more than 100 dogs and cats in its custody. Dogs typically cost $45 to adopt and cats typically cost $30. The free adoption program is designed to make adoptions easier and more frequent, making room for more animals in the shelter, said Alan Davis, manager of Gwinnett County Animal Welfare and Enforcement.

There will also be an extra free adoption day: St. Pitty’s Day. On March 16, a day before St. Patrick’s Day, all pit bull mixes are free to adopt. Many dogs at the shelter have some percentage of pit bull ancestry, allowing potential adopters many options, according to a shelter release.

All animals are spayed or neutered before they go home with their new owner. They also receive a medical exam, vaccinations and a microchip.

The shelter is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. It is located at 884 Winder Highway in Lawrenceville.
