Two Atlanta nonprofits dedicated to helping the needy are joining forces.
Action Ministries, a statewide ecumenical nonprofit, and Feed the Hungry Foundation announced the two organizations will merge to better serve its clients and communities more efficiently.
“In many respects, the hunger problem facing Atlanta and greater Georgia requires solutions and creative thinking to get to greater capacity ,” said John R. Moeller Jr., president and CEO of Action Ministries, which will observe its 50th anniversary this year. ‘This merger works because we trust each other.”
He said the merger made sense, combining the statewide reach of Action Ministries and the resources of Feed the Hungry to expand hunger initiatives.
“There’s no crisis at Feed the Hungry and no crisis at Action Ministries,” Moeller said. “We just felt that we could do way more if we put these organizations together. I think people will have more access to food as a result of this merger.”
Under terms of the merger, which is effective immediately, Feed the Hungry will become a program of Action Ministries and will be known as Action Ministries’ Feed the Hungry program. Combined, the operation will have 64 staffers. Rev. Mack H. Barnes III, executive director of Feed the Hungry Foundation, will remain as the organization’s program director.
Feed the Hungry has no connection to Hosea Feed the Hungry and Homeless, which was founded by civil rights leader Rev. Hosea L. Williams.
Action Ministries focuses on housing, hunger and education. Founded in 1977, Feed the Hungry Foundation provides more than a million meals annually in Atlanta and much of North Georgia. Nearly 60 percent of the food it provides goes to children under the age of 18.
