A shiny Cobb County tag office re-opened after being closed half a year for upgrades that will expand its services.

Cobb Tax Commissioner Carla Jackson said Tuesday, the day of the re-opening, that the county might come slightly under the $300,000 budget to redo the 2932 Canton Road office.

Aside from new technology, one of the goals of the upgrade was for this new office to handle not only motor vehicle issues but also property taxes. Jackson said she hopes to have property tax systems live before August.

The smell of fresh paint on Canton Road means the closing of the 700 South Cobb Drive office, which served the community 20 years.

Jackson said it would have cost more than it was worth to bring that office up to date. Half of the 30 employees at the Cobb office are now at the Canton Road location and more are expected to join them. No one would lose their jobs, Jackson said.

Going from six to five county tax ooffices fixed problems like having eight service windows and sometimes only five employees, Jackson said. “We tried to fill those gaps at all of my other offices.”

The streamlining should speed up customer wait times “so they’re not spending half a day” at the offices, she said.

Jackson’s office is also looking into new tag renewal kiosk locations.
