More than 3,200 gallons of sewage spilled from a Lawrenceville manhole on Monday, contaminating a nearby creek, the Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources said.

The 3,247-gallon spill occurred on Industrial Park Drive shortly after 9 a.m. Some of the sewage entered Shoal Creek nearby.

The Gwinnett County Department of Water Resources stopped the spill at 10:03 a.m. and alerted the Georgia Environmental Protection Division that day.

The department raked the area and spread lime in order to mitigate the effects of the spill. Signs were posted to alert residents to the spill and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified. Exposure to raw sewage generally poses the risk of diseases and infections including gastro-enteritis and E. coli.
