More than 7,200 gallons of sewage spilled from a manhole on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard in Norcross on Monday afternoon, according to the Gwinnett County Department of Water Services.

The spill was caused by rocks, construction material and other debris blocking the flow of sewage. The department was notified of the spill at 12:05 p.m. Monday and stopped it by 1:30 p.m.

Sewage entered an unnamed tributary of Crooked Creek.

The department raked the area and spread lime in order to mitigate the effects of the spill. Signs were posted to alert residents to the spill and the Georgia Environmental Protection Division was notified.

Exposure to raw sewage generally poses the risk of diseases and infections including gastroenteritis and spreading bacteria like E. coli.
