The campaign for a Georgia Senate district covering parts of DeKalb, Rockdale and Newton counties starts Monday, when candidates will begin filing papers to run for office.

They'll compete in a Nov. 3 election to replace former Sen. Ronald Ramsey Sr., D-Lithonia, whom Gov. Nathan Deal appointed in July to become a judge in DeKalb State Court's Traffic Division. Ramsey had served in the Senate since 2007, and there's more than a year left in his two-year term.

Candidate qualifying will last from Monday through Wednesday at the Elections Division of the Secretary of State's Office, and candidates must pay a $400 fee to run.
