A former NBA All-Star who has spent more than 20 years in the Gwinnett County schools has been honored for his work.

Andrew Toney, who won an NBA title with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1983, played with the team from 1980-88. Toney came to Peachtree Elementary School as a physical education teacher in 1994.

Now, he is an instructional coach for Gwinnett County Public Schools in the Community Based Mentoring Program. The program connects middle school boys with attendance and behavior issues with adult volunteers. He is also involved with Project Reconnect, which helps teens who did not graduate from high school further their education.

Toney received a resolution from state senator P.K. Martin recognizing him for his work.
