Homeowners in DeKalb and Rockdale counties who are struggling to pay their mortgages can attend two upcoming events to apply for assistance.

The federally funded Homesafe Georgia program is organizing the effort to help homeowners who are unemployed or underemployed with mortgage assistance for up to two years. The program also covers those who have suffered a military, medical or death-related hardship.

More than 7,000 Georgia homeowners have been approved for assistance already, with about $151 million paid to help them avoid foreclosure.

The free events will be held Saturday at the Community Achievement Center at 4522 Flat Shoals Parkway in Decatur, and Oct. 31 at SunTrust Bank at 1530 Highway 138 South, Suite 200, in Conyers.
