The 42 DeKalb County officers killed in the line of duty over the years are being remembered by their families, peers and county leaders.

A ceremony Wednesday to memorialize the fallen officers included a 21-gun salute, a wreath laying and a helicopter flyover.

The family of Master Police Officer Kevin Toatley was specifically recognized after he died Sept. 19, 2015, while he was driving home from his shift with the DeKalb Police Department. An investigation concluded that Toatley was hit head-on by another driver.

The officers recognized in the ceremony worked for DeKalb, Clarkston, Decatur, Stone Mountain, Doraville and Pine Lake law enforcement agencies. The memorial honored officers who have died in the line of duty as far back as 1852.
