Transit advocates and a local charity today will begin feeding hundreds of furloughed contract workers and active MARTA employees affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The MARTA Army, a volunteer transit advocacy group, and World Central Kitchen, a nonprofit founded by chef Jose Andres, will cook 300 meals each weekday for MARTA transit operators. Priority will be given to furloughed paratransit workers, with other meals distributed to on-duty operators.

The groups will begin distributing meals at lunchtime today at MARTA’s H.E. Holmes station, with other locations to follow. The meals will be provided by Sweet Auburn Seafood.

The pandemic has endangered transit workers across the country, and dozens have died. Last week a MARTA employee died from COVID-19. So far, 25 MARTA employees have tested positive for the disease.

The MARTA Army is seeking volunteers to pick up and deliver meals to transit workers each Monday through Friday. You can volunteer to distribute meals at www.martaarmy.org. Individuals and organizations interested in supporting the operation can email contact@martaarmy.org.
