Georgia lawyers collected and contributed 612,497 pounds of food to the state's seven food banks during the inaugural "Georgia Legal Food Frenzy," a drive to reduce hunger statewide, Attorney General Sam Olens said.

Atlanta lawyer Adrienne Hobbs collected 25,586 pounds of food and won the Attorney General's Cup. Other winners included: Mercer University Law School;  Atlanta lawyer Alex Susor; the state Attorney General's Office; the State Court of Clarke County; Georgia Power's general counsel; and law firms McRae Brooks Warner, Coleman Talley and Frederick J. Hanna and Associates.

To win the competition, Hobbs rented a movie theater and sold tickets to a showing of the movie “World’s Smallest Airport,” a documentary about her husband’s grandfather and his brothers who were stunt pilots. Hobbs raised the most food, per employee, during the drive.

“I am exceedingly proud of the Georgia legal community for their overwhelming generosity and commitment to Georgia’s less fortunate families struggling with hunger,” Olens said Monday. “These donations will assist our food banks with providing balanced, nutritional meals to families over the summer, especially children who rely on free or reduced lunches during the school year."

Danah Craft, executive director of the Georgia Food Bank Association, said the competition engaged more than 200 law firms, law schools and legal organizations in 51 cities across Georgia.

"We are thrilled with the results," Craft said. "We’ll go into the summer strong and ready to help children and families who need food assistance over the summer months.”

The competition was coordinated by the state Attorney General's Office and the Young Lawyers Division of the State Bar of Georgia.
