DeKalb County commissioners have authorized millions more in local funding for a planned expansion at Grady Memorial Hospital.
The Board of Commissioners on Tuesday unanimously approved a resolution that will increase DeKalb funding for the project from $30 million to $37.1 million, 24 percent increase.
Grady will also ask Fulton County to increase its funding from $60 million to $74.2 million, but commissioners there have not yet made a decision.
The two counties jointly own Grady Health Systems, which last year announced a plan to build a new surgical center and expand a clinic that serves people living with HIV and AIDS. When project costs increased, Grady told the counties it needed them to pitch in more than what they initially authorized.
The next step is for Grady to ask the state to approve a certificate of need allowing new construction at the downtown Atlanta hospital. Eventually, both counties are expected to take out bonds backed by property taxes in order to pay for their share of costs.
