Fulton health department: poor financial controls, missed inspections

At an understaffed Fulton County health department, more than 2,000 inspections of restaurants and other places fell by the wayside, putting the health of residents in danger.

Poor financial controls mean the county was not keeping track of collections or insurance billing. A former employee is being investigated for shredding financial documents and skimming cash. The county doesn’t even know how much money is missing or lost.

The findings, from an audit completed late last month, show a disregard for county policies and financial controls in the department.

“We’re disappointed in it,” said Dick Anderson, the county manager.
