The Carolina Panthers have a Fulton County cheering session. At least, their quarterback does.

Fulton County commissioners on Wednesday passed a resolution to honor quarterback Cam Newton, who is from College Park, for his "outstanding achievements in athletics and community service." His team will be competing in Super Bowl 50 on Sunday.

Newton, 26, graduated from Westlake High School in Atlanta before he went to Auburn University, where he won the Heisman Trophy. He played his first football game in a Fulton County park, Commissioner Emma Darnell said.

Darnell said she hoped the resolution would be inspirational to others in the county.

“You may not be Cam Newton, but you have the same opportunity to grow and develop,” she said.
